In Sweden specifically, there are a handful of considerations; legal, logistical and seasonal, that couples often don't know about until they're already deep in the process.

Before you look at a single venue or open a single spreadsheet, spend time with the fundamentals.

Getting aligned on the big picture before you start making decisions will save you months of backtracking.
From there, set a realistic budget. Not a rough number but a real one. Know what you're working with, where the money is coming from and what you're genuinely comfortable spending.

The Swedish planning timeline
18–12 months before: Set your date and lock in your venue. Everything else follows from these two decisions. The best Swedish venues, particularly herrgårdar, exclusive-use properties and northern destinations, normally book 12 to 18 months in advance.
Your photographer and coordinator should also be confirmed during this window.
12–9 months before: Book your key vendors like catering, florals, music. Start building your guest list. Apply for your hindersprövning (marriage licence) if you want to confirm the legal side early.
9–6 months before: Send save the dates. Finalise your ceremony structure. Book accommodation for guests travelling from outside the area. Begin working on styling and design decisions.
6–3 months before: Send formal invitations. Confirm all vendor bookings in writing. Build your day-of timeline. Sort all legal documents as your hindersprövning should be in hand at least six weeks before the wedding date.
3 months to the day: Final confirmations with all suppliers. Send the run sheet and contact list to everyone involved. Brief your toastmaster. Build your wedding day emergency kit. Rest.
Legal requirements in Sweden
To get legally married in Sweden, you need to complete a process called hindersprövning, which is a formal check that there are no legal impediments to your marriage.
Both Swedish citizens and international couples can complete this process, though the required documents differ depending on your nationality and residency status.
Swedish citizens can download and submit the application directly to Skatteverket. Non-Swedish couples need to provide certified birth certificates, valid passports and a certificate of no impediment or single status affidavit from their home country.
Once approved, the marriage licence is valid for four months.

Seasonal considerations
Summer in Sweden, June through August, offers the longest days and the most reliable weather, which is why it remains the most popular wedding season. Midsommar weekend in late June is iconic but logistically complex. Late August often offers beautiful light with fewer scheduling conflicts.
Spring and early autumn are underrated. May and September in particular offer genuine beauty without the summer competition for dates and vendors.
Winter weddings, particularly in December and January, have grown significantly in popularity. Candlelit dinners, snow-covered landscapes and the particular intimacy of a dark Swedish evening make for extraordinary photographs and memories.
Whatever season you choose, always plan for weather contingencies. Sweden's climate is unpredictable, and a good rain plan is not a backup, it's actually a standard part of the day's design.
