Wedding Planner, Coordinator, Stylist or Venue Manager

What’s the Difference?

Planner, coordinator, stylist or venue manager (English)

This is one of the most frequently asked questions in wedding planning — and one of the most consequential to get right. Hiring the wrong type of professional for what you actually need is one of the most common and most avoidable planning mistakes couples make.

Here is a clear, practical answer.

The wedding planner

A wedding planner works with you across the entire planning process — from the early decisions through to the final detail on the day. They help with venue sourcing and contract review, vendor selection and negotiation, budget management and tracking, design direction, timeline building and full coordination of every moving part over months or sometimes years.

A full-service planner is the right choice if you want to hand over the majority of the planning work to a professional, if you're planning from a distance (as many destination wedding couples are), or if the scale and complexity of your wedding requires dedicated ongoing project management.

The wedding coordinator

A coordinator focuses on execution rather than the full planning process. They typically step in during the final weeks before the wedding, take over all vendor communication, build the final day-of timeline, run a final venue walkthrough and then manage the entire day itself.

A good coordinator is invisible on the day — problems are solved before you notice them, the timeline moves as it should, vendors have everything they need, and you are free to be present rather than managing logistics.

Day-of coordination is the minimum professional support that every couple getting married should have. If you've planned everything yourself, a coordinator ensures that everything you've built actually works on the day.

The wedding stylist

A stylist is responsible for the visual world of your wedding — the aesthetic concept, the colour palette, the decor, the floral direction, the table design, the overall atmosphere. They work with your vendors to ensure visual coherence across every element of the day.

Some wedding planners also offer styling services. Many do not, and will connect you with a separate stylist. If your wedding has a strong visual concept that you want professionally executed, a stylist is worth the investment.

The venue manager

A venue manager works for the venue, not for you. Their responsibility is the building, its operations and the venue's obligations to you as a client. They will manage the catering team, the room setup and the venue's logistics — but they are not coordinating your photographer, your florist, your band or your guests.

This distinction matters because couples frequently assume that having a venue manager means they don't need a coordinator. It doesn't. A venue manager's first loyalty is always to the venue. A coordinator's first loyalty is always to you.

Which do you need?

If you want professional support throughout the planning process: a planner. If you want someone to manage the day itself after you've done the planning: a coordinator. If you want professional design execution for the visual elements: a stylist. If your venue has a dedicated team managing the space: a venue manager — but still get a coordinator.

Many couples work with a combination. A coordinator and a stylist is a common pairing. Some planners offer all three services within a single engagement.
